2009 Individual and team Awards
AQUINAS FOOTBALL TEAM EARNS ACADEMIC ALL OHIO
For the second consecutive year, the 2009 Knights football team was selected Academic All-Ohio. The 2009 Aquinas football team was ranked 17th of the 719 football programs in the state to receive the award sponsored by the Ohio High School Football Coaches Association (OHSFCA).
Academic All-Ohio qualification is based on the 1st quarter un-weighted GPA’s of the top 22 players on each team who received a varsity letter.
COLUMBER AND DOUGHERTY SELECTED ACADEMIC ALL-OHIO
In addition to the team award, individually Zak Columber and Matt Dougherty were named Academic All-Ohio. Only 111 of approximately 30,000 players in the State this past season received this honor. Zak and Matt join Eric Vagedes of the 2008 team as Aquinas football players to be named Academic All-Ohio.
FRANCIS EARNS MCDONALD’S SCHOLAR-ATHLETE RECOGNITION
Andrew Francis was named a McDonald’s McScholar-Athlete during the 2009 season and was featured in the national publication “This Week In Football”. He was ranked #1 is his class with a cumulative GPA of 4.18.
COLUMBER NAMED OLD SPICE RED ZONE PLAYER OF THE YEAR
Zak Columber was a state finalist for the Ohio Red Zone Player of the Year. This award is based on academics, leadership, community involvement and accomplishments on the football field. Columber was also named All-Stark County, All-District and was the Stark County Scholar-Athlete of the year recipient.
COLUMBER NAMED WINNER OF 2010 JIM MUZZY SCHOLAR-ATHLETE AWARD
Zak Columber was selected by WHBC and the Stark County Coaches Association as the County's top football
scholar-athlete in 2010. Columber was presented the annual Jim Muzzy Scholastic Achievement Award at the annual
Stark County Football Banquet. He was only the third Aquinas football player to earn this prestigious award joining Chris Lorentz (1984) and Leonard Matz (1983).
